I then found a serial RS to USB converter at work, the Belkin F5UV and borrowed it for the day, but when i got home and plugged it into a Windows 7 64Bit laptop I noticed that there was no driver found for the device. After hours of googling around, I found something useful! Leave the adapter plugged into the computer and go to Start, and right click on My Computer and left click on Properties. I have not tested this on Windows 8, but it should work. And click on Finish.

This is a very old comment but as I had the same problem and found a solution someone might be interested. Your email address will not be published. Yes, this is very important!! The adapter must be plugged in. If you do not see the COM port or if there is an unknown or USB device with a question or exclamation mark, proceed to the un-installation instructions.

PNF file for every device that you install to your system. Go to Start, Run and type c: Then reboot your computer. Leave the adapter plugged into the computer and fu5103 to Start, and right click on My Computer and left click on Properties. Just wanted to confirm that this works on Windows 8. Works like a charme! This would be the number that you would choose in your application.

You can check the oem right below this number just in case. I have a D-link DGSSR rack switch for my servers, and it had some random IP address on the configuration interface that I was not able to find, and I needed to get into the switch to configure some vlans.
I have not tested this on Windows 8, but it should work. Bel,in for any Question or Exclamation marks in front of any of the selections, if you see one in front of Belkin or unknown USB devices, remove these selections by right clicking on them and choose Uninstall, otherwise continue to next step.

If oem6 was the highest number, double click on the oem6 and scroll to the bottom and locate any information about Belkin or Etek.
Beokin through the list of files and locate the files that start with OEM. Yes, this post is about Belki I configured a switch using this driver and device on Win7 with no problems. If you find this information, close the file and delete this oem and the oem.
I solved it using Teraterm instead of Putty. Not sure this RS is supported properly on windows 7!
After hours of googling around, I found something useful! Click on the Hardware Tab and then click on the Device Manager button. My Belkin F5UV got the com port f5k103 8 com8and that is what I am going to connect to in putty. Try locating the highest number OEM, for example oem6 and oem6. Click on the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button.
And click on Finish.
This driver kinda works for me but the putty session will lock up and require a reboot of the laptop at random intervals.
